Senior Design Engineer

Position Summary


Blue Ice is looking for an experienced Senior Design Engineer to join our soft goods product team based at Chamonix.


This role will lead the way in the exploration and implementation of new materials and construction techniques for our soft goods products at Blue Ice. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving innovation and providing technical guidance for the development of new products at Blue Ice. To achieve this, they will be well-acquainted with outdoor industry design trends, end-user requirements, latest material innovations, industry norms and the manufacturing capabilities of our partners.


We are seeking a candidate who is both creatively and technically minded, who works methodically and enjoys hands-on prototype work. The person in this role will work closely with the Soft goods Director and our Designers to see our conceptions through the product development cycle.


Essential Job Functions


  •          Leads our R&D projects: Investigates, designs and tests innovative solutions to aid the end user – with the clear goal of creating lighter, stronger, faster or safer products.
  •          Guides development projects: Works alongside our designers on active projects to provide technical guidance throughout the development cycle, particularly in terms of the implementation of new materials or construction techniques.
  •          Leads the way on Research: Actively leads in the research and sourcing of new materials and manufacturing techniques. Manages our materials and development testing knowledge base.


  •          Travels to visit manufacturing partners in France, Europe, and worldwide.
  •          Travels to tradeshows to keep updated with the industry trends and future technologies.


Minimum Job Qualifications


  •          At least 5 years of product development experience in the outdoor industry required. Specific experience working on back packs or harnesses will be an advantage.
  •          Degree in mechanical engineering or industrial design. A graduate in another field who can show a strong portfolio reflecting 5 years of outdoor development experience would be considered. 
  •          Enjoys working with one’s hands, ideally a natural inventor and experimenter.
  •          Fluent English is necessary. At least a working level of French would be an advantage.
  •          Competent using Adobe Illustrator along with a 3D design package such as Solidworks or Blender. Familiarity also using Microsoft Project and Sharepoint would be ideal.
  •          The ability to transform your ideas into patterns and construct simple prototypes would be seen as an advantage.
  •          Deadline driven and works well under pressure, proven ability to establish and maintain schedules.
  •          Cultural connection to the Blue Ice brand and the mountain culture, ideally a climber, alpinist, or skier.
